Tall poppy syndrome is a phenomenon that involves people criticizing, attacking, or resenting someone due to their success. This behavior often takes place in the workplace, causing harm to the well-being of those who are targeted. The term originated in ancient Rome, where it was used by a tyrannical king to eliminate powerful individuals in his area. The practice of cutting down the tallest poppies in a garden symbolized this desire to remove high achievers from society.

Tall poppy syndrome can manifest in various ways, such as belittling, excluding, or bullying individuals who stand out as high-achievers. Examples of this behavior include taking credit for someone else’s work, unfairly criticizing their accomplishments, or openly displaying hostility towards them. In a workplace setting, individuals may be labeled as aggressive, overly emotional, or accused of being overpaid in an attempt to undermine their success.

Research suggests that tall poppy syndrome may disproportionately affect women and people of color. Women report experiencing higher levels of uncivil treatment in the workplace as they achieve success, with instances of sexism and gender bias playing a significant role in this mistreatment. In a survey of over 4,700 women workers across 103 countries, a majority reported feeling undermined by others due to their achievements, with racism being cited as a contributing factor in some cases.

Men may be more likely than women to undermine the success of their female colleagues in the workplace, perpetuating a culture of jealousy, sexism, and competitiveness. Factors such as lack of confidence, organizational culture, and gender stereotypes also contribute to tall poppy syndrome targeting high-achieving individuals, particularly those who are women or people of color.

Tall poppy syndrome is not limited to the workplace and can also affect individuals in their personal lives. Hostile treatment due to achievements has been reported from friends, partners, parents, siblings, and even on social networks. The negative effects of this behavior can lead to depression, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, and burnout for the person who is the target.

Combatting tall poppy syndrome in the workplace requires proactive measures, such as keeping records of instances of bullying, explaining the effects of the behavior to the perpetrator, seeking advice from HR professionals or managers, and making formal complaints according to organizational grievance procedures. Mental health professionals recommend psychotherapy as a means of managing the mental health effects of tall poppy syndrome, with additional treatments provided as necessary.

Tall poppy syndrome poses a significant threat to the well-being and success of high-achieving individuals, particularly women and people of color. Addressing this behavior requires a multi-faceted approach that includes raising awareness, promoting gender and racial equality, and providing mental health support to those affected. By recognizing and combatting tall poppy syndrome, we can create more inclusive and supportive work environments for all individuals.
